The Vocal Handbook includes information regarding concerts, grading, calendar of events, and extra-curricular vocal opportunities. Parents and students are expected to review the handbook, fill out the contract, and return it to Mrs.Carpenter on or before Wednesday, September 2nd. Students will be given a contract in class during the first week of school.
The Indian Hills Vocal Music Department offers a variety of choral opportunities in which students can participate. The following is a description of the curricular and extra-curricular ensembles available to our seventh and eighth grade singers.
7th GRADE CHOIR
Open to any incoming 7th grade student who wishes to participate, the 7th Choir is actually four separate choirs, divided into bass clef and treble clef sections that rehearse every other day during 3rd and 7th hour. Students are separated into treble clef (girls) and bass clef (boys) so the changing voices receive differentiated instruction. The bass clef and treble clef choir students may combine to perform songs at the concerts and may also combine for some songs with 8th grade Treble or Bass Clef Choirs. 7th Grade Treble and Bass Clef Choirs will perform in both the Winter and Spring Indian Hills Choral Concerts.
7th Concert attendance is required and is part of the semester grade. Concerts are December 17th and May 3rd.
8th GRADE CHOIR
8th Choir is an elective for those who have an interest in continuing with vocal music. 7th grade choir experience is helpful, but not required. Being a beginner in choir with no previous experience can be confusing, but a motivated newcomer can catch on quickly with extra effort. 8th grade choir students prepare challenging music and aspire to a higher degree of musicianship.
8th grade choir students are divided into two separate choirs, Bass Clef (boys, rehearsing during 2nd hour on Black days) and Treble Clef (girls, rehearsing during 6th hour on Orange days). 8th Grade Bass and Treble Choirs may combine to perform songs at the concerts and may also combine for some songs with 7th grade Treble or Bass Clef Choirs. The 8th Grade Choirs perform in both the Winter and the Spring Indian Hills Choral Concerts.
8th Concert attendance is required and is part of the semester grade. Concerts are December 17th and May 3rd.
OPUS
Opus is a statewide Honor Choir held on November 19th in Ames. All Choir students will learn the audition material in class. If a student is interested in auditioning, Mrs.Carpenter will help to make the audition recording. The audition recordings are sent in to be judged by a panel Choir Directors from around the state. Students selected to be in Opus will work with Mrs.Carpenter to learn the rest of the music, and then there is ONE day of rehearsals at ISU, followed by a 4pm concert that same day.
The music for Opus is advanced and offers a challenge to the more experienced singers. It is a great honor to be chosen for this event – typically, over two thousand students audition statewide - but for the many students who do not make it, they are better singers for going through the audition process.
SHOW CHOIR
A group selected by audition that performs pop music with added choreography, staging, and costumes. Auditions for show choir are the week of October 5th, with results being posted in late October. Any 7th or 8th grade student who sings in their grade level choir may audition for this ensemble. Members of this group need to adhere to attendance policy and be in *good standing academically in order to participate in performances. The Show Choir Kick-Off is on Friday, November 6th from 7-8:30pm. Show Choir will rehearse on Mondays, from 2:45-3:30 starting on November 16th. After Winter Break, we continue with Monday rehearsals, but ADD Friday 7am rehearsals as well.
