"Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body." - Sir Richard Steele
Welcome to Reading with Mrs. Hoyt
Our class has two main goals:
1) To improve reading comprehension
2) To rediscover the JOY of reading
Mrs. Hoyt has been at Indian Hills as the Reading Resource teacher for 14 years, after teaching high school English in Texas for 6 years. She graduated from Cornell College and Viterbo Universty with a Master Degree as a Reading Specialist. She has four sons and her husband is a teacher as well. Reading is a passion of Mrs. Hoyt's, but wasn't always. She was a struggling reader as a child which helps her in guiding her students through their own reading struggles.
The focus of Reading class is to get the students to actively engage their brains with the text as they read using strategies such as questioning, connecting, visualizing, evaluating and inferencing.
Students always get to choose their own books to read and are expected to read outside of school for at least 20 minutes every day. The more they read the better they get.
